A typical health and safety policy for a Technology
and Design department should include information on
the following issues.
Procedures
for:
- maintenance of machinery and equipment;
- reporting equipment failure and unsafe conditions;
- reporting accidents (no matter how trivial);
- maintaining first aid facilities;
- use,control,storage and disposal of hazardous substances;
- introducing new substances and equipment;
- emergencies.
Information on:
- risk assessments (carried out as per BS4163:2000,
Section 2);
- who is permitted to use specified equipment;
- who is permitted to supervise pupils;
- the type of work that cannot be left for use of
substitute teachers;
- the health and safety training successfully completed
by all members of staff.
Expected practice with respect
to:
- daily checks;
- safety instruction prior to the use of equipment
and machines;
- locking off power in unsupervised workshops;
- use of protective measures;
- everyday maintenance of machines and equipment;
- keeping workshops and stores clean and free from
obstructions.
