A typical health and safety policy for a Technology and Design department should include information on the following issues.

Procedures for:

  • maintenance of machinery and equipment;
  • reporting equipment failure and unsafe conditions;
  • reporting accidents (no matter how trivial);
  • maintaining first aid facilities;
  • use,control,storage and disposal of hazardous substances;
  • introducing new substances and equipment;
  • emergencies.

Information on:

  • risk assessments (carried out as per BS4163:2000, Section 2);
  • who is permitted to use specified equipment;
  • who is permitted to supervise pupils;
  • the type of work that cannot be left for use of substitute teachers;
  • the health and safety training successfully completed by all members of staff.

Expected practice with respect to:

  • daily checks;
  • safety instruction prior to the use of equipment and machines;
  • locking off power in unsupervised workshops;
  • use of protective measures;
  • everyday maintenance of machines and equipment;
  • keeping workshops and stores clean and free from obstructions.
