Primary Numeracy Strategy Cohort Training |
Cohort
Training in Numeracy
Courses
in support of the Northern Ireland Numeracy Strategy
have been organised over a period of three three-year
groupings. Schools bid to become members of either Cohort
1 (2001-2004), Cohort 2 (2002-2005) or Cohort 3 (2003-2006).
A structured programme of support will be offered to
each cohort as follows:
YEAR
1
2
days training for every teacher of mathematics (sub
cover centrally funded - Code : ND). Training dates
have been staggered to facilitate the employment of
substitute teachers. The focus is on raising achievement
in mathematics by considering pupils’ motivation
and different learning styles. In particular, the raising
of standards in mental maths and the use of ICT to enhance
teaching and learning are examined.

Day
1 begins by looking at some of the key factors in pupils’
learning. How can we create an appropriate atmosphere
in which pupils are relaxed but alert, able to learn
and motivated to give of their best?
The
session on Mental Maths concentrates on removing the
possible stress from mental maths sessions. Strategies
for mental calculations are examined and the use of
the Teaching and Learning Files is discussed. Most of
the afternoon session is devoted to the use of ICT to
enhance teaching and learning in the Mathematics classroom.
In particular, we examine how prudent use of ICT can
act as a motivational factor to many pupils.

When
applying for the Numeracy courses teachers indicate
their preference for either Day 2a or 2b. The structure
for each day is exactly the same but examples used to
illustrate some of the main themes are pitched at different
levels. The 2a course is aimed at levels 3 to 6 while
the 2b course uses examples from level 6 upwards. The
main theme of the day is an examination of different
learning preferences and their implications forclassroom
teaching.
One
session will focus on the third section of the Teaching
and Learning Files, Lines of Progression and how this
might be used as a planning document. The aim is to
help students make connections in their learning within
mathematics and to make mathematical links across the
curriculum.Following on from this the final session
looks at strategies for helping pupils not just to learn
but also to retain knowledge and skills.
