Diversity in a European Context: A School Day with a difference

On arriving into school on an autumnal morning, what could be more appealing than the delicious aroma of Cuisine de France wafting through the corridors? Close your eyes and, just for a split second, it could almost be the summer hols abroad, somewhere, Europe, blue skies, hot sun, mmm…. In Markethill High School on the 23 rd September, when they celebrated the European Day of Languages, although it was not really a trip abroad, pupils and staff had a sampler of this as they made their way to the school canteen to enjoy a delicious continental breakfast.

Prior to indulging in the delights of croissants and hot chocolate à l’Européene, pupils took part in a special assembly, in which prayers and readings followed the theme of religious tolerance. The breakfast itself, carefully prepared by Mrs. Marshall and her staff, was a delight savoured by all, and the event was most enjoyable. The subtext was about working together in school and pupils also employed their teamwork and communication skills during a quiz in language classes. The International Unit of the SELB supported the event and supplied a colourful background of European flags. Vital and much appreciated support came from the local community – Cuisine de France, Sainsbury of Armagh, Golden Cow, Linwoods, Hunters and The Village Bakery of Markethill. £100 raised at the event was donated to the NSPCC.

As the fabric of Northern Ireland changes rapidly due to European Union expansion, so it is vital that our pupils meet the changes and challenges in terms of skills and attitudes, in a constructive way. The events of the European Day of Languages in Markethill High School have given the school community an opportunity not only to celebrate, but also to develop a positive outlook on diversity and tolerance.
