The statutory responsibility for road safety education, training and publicity in Northern Ireland rests with the Department of Environment.

The Education Reform (NI) Order 1989 and 1996, list Road Traffic Studies as a contributory subject within the Environment and Society Area of Study. This inclusion is unique to the NI Curriculum and is an indication of how seriously the Department of Education treats this subject.

In the context of education and training that responsibility is discharged through the Road Safety Education Officer Service, based within each Education and Library Board Area.
