High Scope is a thinking skills approach which has a firm basis in both theory and empirical research. It is used in nursery and KS1 classrooms and has demonstrated long-term beneficial effects. Thinking in the approach is essential for the child and the classroom assistant.

Two schools in the SELB have been using High Scope for a significant number of years : St Peter’s PS and Dromintee PS. In Jan-Mar 2003 a piece of research matched the two schools to two controls and the P4 children were observed for evidence of thinking skills or ‘habits of mind’. The results of that research are available from kate.ohanlon@selb.org

An encouraging outcome has been the opportunity to train 28 P1 teachers and classroom assistants in the theories and approaches of High Scope in the coming year (2003 – 04). We are also planning to train a trainer in High Scope so that there will be ongoing opportunity for more of our teachers to access High Scope approaches.
