| This is a well-researched and successful
programme which provides an accreditation (Open College Network)
for Reading Partnership Volunteers as well as providing support
for reluctant readers at Key Stages 1, 2 3. The training
involves 3 full days in a Teachers’ Centre and the completion
of a portfolio by the volunteer.
Content :
- Awareness raising of what is involved in the reading
process
- Diagnosis/assessment including miscue analysis
- Strategies for supporting and encouraging reading
- Examination of appropriate reading materials
The trained Volunteer then works with up to 3 children, individually,
for 15 mins (3 times a week). The children and young people
selected are within the ‘grey area’ of reading
attainment. Initial evaluation studies have demonstrated the
effectiveness of this programme.
