This is a well-researched and successful programme which provides an accreditation (Open College Network) for Reading Partnership Volunteers as well as providing support for reluctant readers at Key Stages 1, 2 3.

The training involves 3 full days in a Teachers’ Centre and the completion of a portfolio by the volunteer.

Content :

  • Awareness raising of what is involved in the reading process
  • Diagnosis/assessment including miscue analysis
  • Strategies for supporting and encouraging reading
  • Examination of appropriate reading materials

The trained Volunteer then works with up to 3 children, individually, for 15 mins (3 times a week). The children and young people selected are within the ‘grey area’ of reading attainment. Initial evaluation studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of this programme.
