A language in common
The QCA has developed a set of descriptions for early achievement in English as an additional language that covers stages before the National curriculum minimum scale. The new descriptions are set out in: A Language in Common: Assessing English as an additional language (£4). The descriptions are designed to show how different types of behaviour indicate small progress steps towards language competence. A little reading goes a long way
The DfEE booklet for parents, giving advice on how they may support the development of their children's reading skills, is available in Bengali, Urdu, Gujerati, Chinese, Hindi and Punjabi. A multicultural guide to children's books 0-16+
Guide to multicultural children's books including an annotated bibliography arranged in sections, articles looking at the current state of our multicultural society, and pen-portraits of several authors and illustrators whose work features in the guide. Action Aid
Produces a range of multicultural books, teaching materials and resources to help teachers to bring a wide variety of cultures and traditions into the classroom. A catalogue is available on request. In particular, ActionAid has produced a guide called Hadithi Nzuri (meaning 'a good story' in Swahili) which sources high quality fiction from other cultures in Africa, Asia and Latin America. It includes nearly 200 picture books, stories and novels from over 30 countries which are available in the UK. It also gives some background to statutory requirements for the English and geography curriculum at key stages 1 and 2 and gives examples of activities that teachers can use alongside the recommended texts. Activity pack for extended holidays abroad
Pack developed by Rochdale Partnership Education Service (with Single Regeneration Budget funding) so that Pakistani or Bangladeshi families can make the most of extended visits to their home country to broaden their children's education. Activities are intended for families to do together and parents (and children) are encouraged to contribute in their mother tongue. Bengali Women's Support Group traditional tales
Two colourful bilingual books of traditional tales published by the BWSG, entitled 'Grandma's Treasure Trove' (£5.95) and 'The Snake Prince & Other Folk Tales From Bengal' (£7.95). Both titles contain age-old stories retold for primary school children and are vividly illustrated.

CLPE, the Centre for Language in Primary Education
The CLPE have produced a very useful resource pamphlet for Southwark schools which focuses on the languages spoken by children in Southwark from ethnic minorities. It covers some of the related cultural features and information about each language as well as giving information about dual text publications in these languages. EAL: More than Survival

Into the Enchanted Forest: language, drama and science in primary schools
Ed. by Avril Brock. The story of an enchanted forest, created in a multicultural classroom in Bradford by teachers, lecturers and student teachers to help upper primary children to learn science and develop their language. The teachers and student teachers reflect on how they used this multisensory environment to teach science and drama, and how working in the children's first language as well as English helped to heighten the pupils' enthusiasm and focus their learning. Removing the barriers: raising the achievement level of minority ethnic pupils
DfEE publication intended to identify key points in improving the attainment of pupils who belong to minority ethnic groups. Suggestions are based on good practice observed in schools and are intended as a starting point. Researchers found a strong link between success and the extent to which parents and the community were involved in the life of the school. High expectations by teachers, supported by parents, was found to lift ambitions.

Refugees
Editor Jennifer Langer has compiled an ESOL Refugee Pack with specific reference to Somalis, but applicable to all refugees aimed at beginners and elementary levels. The pack provides bilingual narratives of refugees' personal experiences and 24 situations with dialogues for language practice. There is also information for tutors about the Somali refugee group. Jennifer Langer also publishes Intermediate ESOL: examining the system in Britain, designed to help adults new to Britain examine and understand British systems, and runs workshops with refugee writers for schools, colleges and other organisations.

Relearning to Learn
The National Union of Teachers has produced a booklet offering advice to teachers new to refugee families. The DfES-funded publication is based on the outcome of discussions at a symposium held by the union last July, and on the expertise of teachers already working with refugee children. The booklet lists six guiding principles for teachers: individual class teachers should not have to cope alone; a "can do" approach works best; view refugee children as having to relearn how to Learning and Skills Development Agency remember that they are not responsible for their situation; the host children are central to the solution; and teachers may need specific professional development and additional resources. Words for School Use series
Produced by the Refugee Council this is a series of illustrated classroom word lists in languages spoken by refugee children. Targeted at newly arrived children who are just beginning to learn English, they can also be used for children who have little or no literacy skills in their mother tongue to help them develop reading and writing skills in those languages. Working with refugees and asylum seekers
A free pack of support materials for providers of English for speakers of other languages, produced by a consortium of partners in support of the Skills for Life strategy. It provides information on setting up provision, delivery, training and resources, as well as background information on legal definitions and requirements and the profile of refugees in the UK.
