Video training pack offering advice and guidance to primary teachers and early years practitioners who work with refugee children. It covers a wide range of issues, including activities to support language development. Produced by Save the Children in association with the Refugee Council. Cost £20.

NLS materials for EAL pupils
Early in 2000, the National Centre for Literacy and Numeracy produced a video and other materials suggesting how to adapt aspects of the NLS for EAL pupils, although publication of these was limited to LEA advisers and other specialists. However, the Centre does plan to produce materials for use by individual schools with EAL pupils in due course.

CD-Rom produced by ActionAid (see above) to support the teaching of non-fiction literacy at key stage 2. It includes sections on recounts, non-chronological reports, argument, instruction and explanation, all drawing on information provided about Kenya. Cost £15.

Tell Me A Story That I Can Understand
A series of dual-language audio tapes featuring classic children's stories in a wide range of languages, including Albanian, Arabic, Cantonese, French, Portuguese, Punjabi, Somali, Spanish, Bengali, Turkish and Urdu. Stories currently available are Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Three Billy Goats Gruff and Jack and the Beanstalk, with more to come in the future. Cost £4.99 each. The ESOL literacy resource pack
CD-Rom of materials developed by ESOL practitioner Lisa Karlsen to meet the needs of adult ESOL learners. The multi-sensory teaching units enable the students to learn at their own pace and improve their reading, writing, spelling, handwriting, punctuation and study skills.
