The Department of Education plans for introducing Local and global Citizenship into the curriculum of every school in Northern Ireland got underway during the school year 2002 - 2003.

Between November 2002 and March 2003 fourteen schools within SELB nominated up to 5 teachers each to attend a five day training programme in Local and Global Citizenship. Training was organised in two cohorts.

  • Cohort One
    St.Mary's High School Lurgan, Clounagh Junior High School, Tandragee Junior High School, Lurgan Juoir High School, St Micheal's Grammar School, Lough Road Learning Centre, Holy Trinity College Cookstown and St. Catherine's College Armagh.
  • Cohort Two
    Dromore High School, Integrated College Dungannon, St.Colman's College Newry, St.Mary's High School Newry, St. Mark's High School Warrenpoint and St. Patrick's Grammar School Armagh.

Teachers who have already participated in the professional development programme will be invited to one further training day in each of the next two years.

A similar programme of support is on offer to additional schools each year until 2006. by June 2006 every post primary school will have a core team trained for the delivery of Local and Global Citizenship.
